The Anaheim Angels, formerly known as the California Angels, have not
been known as one of the most successful baseball teams by any means.
They are known to many as a team who has choked in the playoffs numerous
times, been the victims of personal tragedies, been plain mediocre, and
been a part of several late season collapses. However, this all changed
a few years ago. |

-
The Anaheim Angels are a professional
baseball team in the West Division of the American League (AL). The Angels play
at Edison International Field in Anaheim, California. The team takes its name
from its original home—Los Angeles, The City of Angels.
-
The Los Angeles Angels were founded by former actor Gene Autry in 1961 and
played their first five seasons in Los Angeles. After the 1965 season the club
moved to Anaheim and became the California Angels. In 1972 the Angels acquired
right-handed pitcher Nolan Ryan from the New York Mets. In his eight seasons
with the team, Ryan led the league in strikeouts seven times and in shutouts
twice; he also threw four of his all-time-record seven no-hitters.

California won its first division title in 1979, led by AL most valuable player
(MVP) Don Baylor. Superstar outfielder and designated hitter Reggie Jackson
joined the Angels in 1982 and led the league in home runs that year to power
California to its second division championship. A third division crown in 1986
brought the Angels to the brink of a World Series appearance before they lost to
the Boston Red Sox, 4 games to 3, in the AL Championship Series.
-
The franchise was purchased by the Walt Disney Company in May 1996 and renamed
the Anaheim Angels before the 1997 season began. In 2002 the Angels qualified
for a playoff berth as a wild-card team before defeating the New York Yankees
and Minnesota Twins in the playoffs. The club then edged the San Francisco
Giants in a seven-game World Series for its first championship. Anaheim was led
by outfielder Garret Anderson, pitcher Jarrod Washburn, and third baseman Troy Glaus, who was named the World Series MVP.
