The Arizona Diamondbacks, a 1998 National League expansion team, stunned
the world of Major League Baseball by winning the West Division title in
1999, an unheard-of feat for a second-year team. Further incredible
success followed, including the thrilling 2001 World Series victory over
the New York Yankees, but that first glow of triumph has given way to
Arizona’s weakest team to date, which lost 111 games in 2004. The roster
has undergone a shakeup, with pitcher Randy Johnson departing and
outfielder Shawn Green The tickets are still flying out of the box
office, because the Arizona Diamondbacks are a quality organization with
magnificent facilities. |

The Arizona Diamondbacks are a
professional baseball team and one of five teams in the West Division of the
National League (NL). Based in Phoenix, Arizona, the Diamondbacks play at Bank
One Ballpark. The club takes its name from the venomous diamondback rattlesnake
found in the southwestern United States.
-
Randy Johnson Baseball player Randy Johnson overcame poor control early in his
career to become one of the most dominant pitchers in the major leagues.
Johnson, one of the tallest players in baseball history, won consecutive Cy
Young Awards in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 and was named co-most valuable player
(MVP) of the 2001 World Series.

The Diamondbacks played their
first season as a franchise in 1998, and by signing a variety of free
agents—including pitcher Randy Johnson—earned a berth in the playoffs in 1999.
The team struggled the following year but rebounded in 2001, paced by Johnson
and pitcher Curt Schilling. The two aces led Arizona to the World Series, where
the Diamondbacks defeated the three-time defending champion New York Yankees in
a dramatic seven-game series.
-
The Arizona Diamondbacks play in
beautiful Bank One Ball Park (the BOB) which is located in the heart of downtown
Phoenix. The ballpark first opened in 1998 and is known for the pool located in
right center field as well as its retractable roof. The roof allows fans going
to the game to enjoy the weather on a nice spring day, but avoid the desert
summer heat.
