One of the big success stories of the 1990s were the Cleveland Indians,
who mirrored the renaissance of their city by playing their best
baseball in 40 years. While the Indians are recovering from a couple of
down years in 2005, they improved by 12 wins in 2004 over their 2003
record. With the addition of pitcher Kevin Millwood to the staff, the
Indians are looking sharp, so tickets to see them at Jacobs Field are
still treasured items. |

The Cleveland Indians are a
professional baseball team and one of five teams in the Central Division of the
American League (AL). Formerly called the Blues, the Bronchos, and the Naps, the
club’s current name was chosen by a group of sportswriters in 1915. According to
legend, the name recalls Louis Sockalexis, a member of the National League’s
Cleveland Spiders during the late 1890s and the first Native American to play
professional baseball. The Indians play at Jacobs Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
-
The Cleveland Indians are one of the charter franchises of the American League,
now playing in the American League Central Division against such rivals as the
Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox, and Kansas City Royals. The Indians won
their first World Series in 1920, won again in 1954 but have yet to win another
championship, after losing in 7 games to the Florida Marlins in the 1997 World
Series.

That Indians team was known for
its strong offense led by sluggers Jim Thome and Albert Belle. The Indians were
not considered a good franchise during most of the period of time between
championships, with an especially weak period in the ‘60s and ‘70s, but for the
second half of the ‘90s they were perennial contenders in the American League
Central. After their last American League Central Championship in 2001, the
Indians began a rebuilding process.
-
The current Indians are led by
first-time manager Eric Wedge. They are a young baseball team known for its fast
outfield. Their best pitcher apart from Millwood is a big, hard-throwing lefty
named C.C. Sebathia. The Indians look to be able to bounce back quickly in what
is generally a weak American League Central Division.
